Hi, I became a new chicken momma when I adopted my daughter's 2 Rhode Island reds in November. They were abt 2 yrs old, GOOD layers. Sadly we lost Eggnus to a raccoon in January but Eggatha adjusted & has laid an egg a day every day but 2 throughout the winter. I live about 30 miles west of salt lake city Utah so we have cold winters but she never stopped laying. My daughter in law ordered 10 Welsummers & gave me 6 to raise for the experience & will take back 4 to add to her large flock shortly. They are about 6wks old & BIG. I have lots of questions & DIL Is not often handy to ask.
I am an active 77 yr old, own a home I bought when I retired in 2015, my son lives with me temporarily (50) & my daughter (53) lives 10 miles away with 2 of her 3 kids (14 & 18).her oldest (28) lives in SLC. My son has 2 boys, 28 & 25, in Park City. None of the gk are married so no great-grand in the near future.
I am long-divorced, spend way too much time reading, used to hike a lot in southern Utah red-rock country & cross-country ski til my knees started failing. I love to garden & since the yard here was a disaster when I bought I am making it all flower beds, groundcovers & vegetables front & back except for the chicken run.
I am originally from Rochester NY but lived in SLC, Boston, northern California & Annapolis b4 retiring back in Utah, God's country!
Now that the chicks are getting big I am uncertain how soon I can move them outside as I have no heater for the pre-fab hen house. The lows are running 40-45 degrees for next 10 days, highs 70-80 but in Utah there are no guarantees!
My DIL recommended BYC & it is great but is like reading a dictionary, I go off on tangents & read 10 pages of one of Ridh's threads b4 i recovered & got back to original topic. I'm counting on you all for help!
