When can you tell a chick is a rooster?

she might just be getting bullied, maybe the other chicks see her as weak because she is healing, I dont know, but If it were my chick, i'd just leave her seperated till she was completly healed, You don't say where/what you have these chicks in, but each chick should have at least a sq ft of space, and access to fresh food and water 24/7 , so if you have six chicks, they should be in a 2X3 sq ft place of space, This space increases as they get bigger, so your pen is going to have to get bigger as they grow.oh and my measurements are just what i read from my research, I am sure alot of others have their own values for "chick spacing"

Hen pecking happens, alot when they just dont have enough "ME" space, lol hey all of us ladies should be able to relate!!

You are so right I will enlarge there space. But it is wierd because they only do it to her poor charlie

another thing is maybe they are pecking at her cuz she "smells" funny, it could be the medication you are using, maybe when she is going back in the with them, she smells "different" so that is why they are picking on her, me, i'd just keep her seperated till she was completly healed and healthy.

I am new to chickens too, but this basic animal behavior is survival of the fittest, you know, only the strong survive, Maybe the scents she has on her make the other chicks see her as a weak one so they pick on her.

just my thoughts.. good luck, hoping charlie gets better soon.

Our rhode island reds starting pecking each others feathers this winter, they have plenty of room, food etc, I spent money on distractions, I tried debeaking but that didn't help. We gave them a rooster to play with, they keep taking his feathers too. No cannibalism though. Just naked. We ended up taking out the birds that were quieter and not pecking and leaving the crazy ones together. They seem healthy and lay an egg almost everyday, just more aggressive. My roosters in a separate chicken coop wintered just fine without going crazy. I think it is the breed. Great layers, but fly up at me if they think you have a treat. So I am breeding them back to some light bramas, for meat and a quieter disposition I hope plus I am going to try black australorps this year but I am not getting pure bred rhode island reds again.
