When can you tell if you have a rooster?

Do your neighbors have dog?Have you been listening to their dogs yap over the years? That is the case in my neighborhood. I have been the only one NOT to own a dog so my neighbors dare not complain to me about my Roo.

after last night. I am thinking of going and getting the LOUDEST rooster I can find and keeping a light on him all night long. I swear if anyone in my neighborhood says a word to me about some day time clucking. I will give the very dogs a reason to bark all night long.

Dogs barking at night is my biggest pet peeve. I don't sleep good anyway and we live in a little canyon/valley where every little sound is magnified by the surrounding mountains. There are dogs a mile away that sound like they are right under my window. We keep our dogs inside the barn at night and the older one in the house. If we do leave them out one always starts barking at something then I'm out side at midnight calling for the dog to "get in this house!" I'm sure my neighbors just love that too!

Since I'm gripping... how about people who leave their porch lights on all night long. I guess I'm a bad neighbor, we live in an area where our next door neighbor is at least 6 acres away but they leave this one little light on. The only one in the entire neighborhood. ( there are 16 houses on about 300 acres) DRIVES ME NUTS!! Why live out in the country if you need night lights and 6 foot block walls?

I know, I know... just close my curtains and shut up!

I ordered 11 buff orp females and 1 male. They are now 4 weeks old and the male has a little red on his comb and is starting to get his waddles. Others all look the same - no red, so I'm assuming that's the little roo.

If it helps ease your mind at all, I was worried about my neighbors too. Although I live in a little bit of a rural suburb, it's still the suburbs and I have neighbors on 3 immediate sides. I've been keeping my banties in a pen in the backyard and my roo starts crowing some mornings at 4am. Drives ME nuts, so I checked with the neighbors. Two love the chickens and said he doesn't bother them at all - they actually like it. The other neighbor said it doesn't bother them at all (they aren't fond of the chickens) but the roo bothers the neighbor on the other side of him. Since his dog (beagle) yelps all day, I'm not too worried and can relax a little. Soon I'll have TWO roosters crowing...then I'll panic...but until then, since nobody says anything about their dogs, I'm not too worried.
