Okay I think I have a chick that is starting to lay. I haven't found smaller eggs. I did find an egg by our feeder with no shell. Is That Normal for a first staring to lay chick??

if ur egg has no shell that means your chickens are lacking somthing in their diet my grandpas older chickens started laying eggs like that? u can by oyster shell for them it should harden their egg shells or u can save ur egg shells after u cook eggs in the morning to feed them it should help with the shell problem

Yup, lack of calcium I'd guess... never heard of a new layer doing that... feed them egg shells or oyster shells... it worked for me!

I give my chickens oyster shells all the time. It is in there feed and sprinkled on the ground. My ISA Brown chicks are getting big. I do now think one of the chicks layed that egg because it was on the floor of the coop. They don't normally lay there...

With new layers sometimes there are kinks in the production. You can get a couple of different misfires while they work out they process. Shelless eggs are one of them. One or two is nothing to worry about.

Glad to hear that! I love all the knowledge in the forums on this site!
The only shelless egg I ever had was from my 3 year old... and like I said in my previous comment, oyster shell fixed that right up. (they have always gotten egg shell.)
So, with 40 new babies, I am relived to know now that if I find another shelless egg when they start laying, it might not be cause for alarm!

Thank you!!

It is scary looking, isn't it! We had a hen that was acting pretty funky and we wondered if she could be "bound" with an egg. As luck would have it, we were in the right place at the right time and witnessed her delivering what looked like a thick water balloon! Hummmmm, Mother Nature!
