I did a quick search and did not find another thread like this so if there is one, please let me know and I’ll move over there.

I’m looking forward to the impending arrival of my girls laying their first eggs (they are about 16 weeks now) and thought I’d love to hear how others felt when they found their first egg. And if you’d want to share photos, that would be awesome as well!

Some questions:
What breed are yours girls?
How old were they then they first laid an egg?
How did their first egg compare to subsequent ones?

Thanks, and happy egg gathering!

The very first egg I got from my flock was the prettiest bluish/greenish egg from an Easter Egger named Tracey. She was bout 18/19 weeks old. I'll never forget the excitement of finding that first one...kind of like Christmas and a birthday all rolled into one little package.

I can't find a picture of her egg right now but this was Tracey:

What a pretty girl!

Don't know for sure my chicklets have started yet, but ... maaaaybeee? I have 8 older hens, consisting of 4 BO's, 2 EEs, and OE and some kind of a bantam cross; out of them I usually get 3 to 5 eggs a day, usually 3 brown eggs and couple blueish or greenish.

The NEW pullets consist of 9 EEs and 5 BLs. So I'm really looking forward to getting more blue/green eggs and my first ever white eggs! So far I have seen no "fairy" eggs or "leather" eggs like you sometimes see when pullets first start laying. But today I did get SIX eggs, which is unusual. All are pretty much normal size. So .... could be? How do I feel? Mostly puzzled, I guess, lol!

the first eggs are usually soft and kind of leathery. When the arrive depends on their breed.
Their first eggs can be in some unusual shapes as well.
But it is so exciting!
Silkies took 6 months or so to lay.
Wyandotte’s and cuckoo’s took about 3.

what a wide array of chickens you have! Sounds like one of them started laying... or maybe one of your older girls is good at hiding eggs ;)

Lol, yes, I actually think it's the Bantam cross that hides her nest. She's pretty good at getting out of the chicken yard and we've found eggs in the carport a time or two. I cook them for Gracie, our Sheltie. Sometimes Gracie finds them and brings them to us but she can't tell us where she finds them, lol!

THEY'RE LAYING!!!

Okay, so they are not ALL laying yet, and the BLs are not - I haven't gotten any white eggs yet - but instead of my usual three eggs a day I have been getting 5 or 6 the last two days, so :weeYIPPEE!!!!
Also, I can SEE the ones that are new by size, shape and color. Sniff! My little girls are growing up! :ya

I got my first eggs from my girls almost 4 years ago, 12 black sexlinks, I'd calculated out to 19 weeks during the first week in August, they started early, the 3rd week in July..lol, I was haunting the nest box, going out almost every hour checking, found 2 little eggs, I was such a proud parent.. :lau:gig:love. I think I might have taken a 100 pictures of them, I still take a lot of pictures of the chickens, the eggs, etc.
