when do ameraucanas get their beards (if they are going to get one?)

Very interesting thread.

I purchased some AmecaunnasI bought some A couple of years back . these were my first and they came from a friend who works in the Ga Aug office. He sold them to me as purebred blues. the rooster was a very handsome boy at a year but he had a large comb. .It looked like an comb belonging to a Marin ` . The hens were splashes which turned at maturity solid blue. This is the really crazy part most of these ladies laid turquoise eggs except this one very dark brown bird . She laid very dark green eggs. She had a beautiful beard and muffs. and she was quiet small. I called her black beard because she had a black beard. She also looked like the purebred Amercannas which we saw at the last show. I gave her away because she laid green eggs and then placed her sisters and brother.

They were also very large chickens.

From what I have read the Beard/muffs are dominant traits. Being that Ameraucanas have essentially the same history as EEs (mutts that are now bred to standard) it would seem possible 2 "pure" Ameraucana parents both had the recessive non-beard type and your chicks are expressing that. Now if NONE of them have beards, I would call in to question both parents being muff/bearded.

I know of one Rooster here on BYC that is the result of a Ameraucana/Leghorn cross with no muffs of beard, which would suggest the Ameraucana was heterozygous for that trait. That is assuming what i read about it being dominant is indeed true.

Thank you My one hen in those chicks had no beard. As you explained they might have been Pure bred. I being a really rank novice with no help til this list thank you very much.

Sorry I am a very old old man and I lost my train of thought for a moment.

I am new to the Ameraucana breed and was wondering if someone could give me the color of my 2. I have a Rooster(Looking out the door) and hen facing camera.

Awww... with her feet, I've seen that happen from too much inbreeding or bad genes... sometimes both. The good news is that i bet she is the sweetest bird you own!

Oh is this a coincidence? I'm assuming by ga you're referring to Georgia? We live in Georgia...and at the beginning of the year we purchased 5 purebred "blue" Ameraucanas from a guy who had been breeding them for over 15 years...well, one roo had severe crossbeak that showed up at at 2 weeks old, another roo had mild crossbeak that developed around 4 weeks old, 4/5 were missing 1 toe nail, and all were actually blacks...not blues. Fast forward to 24 weeks old, the roo with severe crossbeak seemed to have died of a heart attack at 12 weeks. The roo with mild crossbeak has gorgeous feathers, but a floppy single comb. The third roo...(yeah...) is almost perfect...except for the bad leakage in his hackle feathers. The girls...one is smaller than the other...and her comb is a super small single comb...the bigger hen also seems to lay a brownish greenish egg...while our smaller girl lays beautiful (but tiny) blue eggs...what are the odds...
