What I mean is this: when do they switch from making peeping cheeping noises to clucking squawking sounds?

Does it depend on the breed?

I have one week old Black Javas, Cochins, Welsummers and Australorps, if that helps.

About 16 weeks. Some a little sooner and some a little later. Depends. I have a roo that didn;t crow til 24 weeks, and another that did at 14 weeks. Hens are pretty consistent.

I believe mine started changing at around 12 weeks old last year. It took a several weeks for 18 birds to change their voice.

My RIRs started chooking at me at around 8 weeks, but tonight when I went out to shut off the light in the coop, they were still peeping and trilling at me...I think they keep certain sounds as communication no matter what.
