When Do Hens Start Laying?/Share Your Laying Experiences

It is a great feeling the first egg.

We got our first egg today! We have 5 BA's that are 20 weeks old. For some reason I feel really proud to have our first home grown egg.

it's a tiny little thing, but its perfect!

All of those small victories add up... Congrats!

Not at all. About everyone overthinks/overworries this stuff. I felt like a fresh granpop when I got my first one..

LOL, You are totally normal. If you end up with multiple breeds, different sized birds, or the EEs, it stays the same... what colour will it be, how big or small will she lay, what shape, what sound does she make, etc? This is only the beginning of the obsession. LOL.

Here's an interestibg one. Yesterday morning one of the older hens hopped in the nest and I was still in the yard when she came out, so I opened the hatch to retrieve the egg and there were two-one the size of a banty egg! Never saw that before... I don't know if it's possible to get a 'double' or another hen was in there first and laid an undersized egg, or what... Only BA's in the enclosure and they've always laid roughly the same size eggs. There are a couple immature pullets in there, but they shouldn't come into lay for another couple months-they're 12 1/2 weeks old.

That's a beautiful chicken. What breed is it? I have a thirteen week old Red Sex Link and she has the same beautiful colours as yours.

No way! You raised them from day olds, worried about them for months. Every right to be happy and proud.

Not 2 from the same girl that close together. Any chicken can lay a much smaller or LARGER than normal egg every now and then.
