When should I pick up the eggs my chickens have laid? My friend (he has over 70 chickens that are range/coop chickens) says I should pick them up the same time each evening between 6-7 p.m. I am afraid the chickens will crush/eat/damage the eggs, so I have taken them out as I find them. I have 14 eggs to date from my 4 hens over the past 2 weeks. What is the correct time to pull out the eggs?

Humm never heard of picking up the eggs at a certain time... I just get mine as i find them. Just make sure to check at the end of the day to make sure to get them all. It is easier for people with large flocks to just get them all at one time. I think it is fine how you are doing it.

I'd continue taking eggs out as you find them. I usually collect my eggs when I put the chickens back into their coop, around 5-6 pm.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I collect them as they are laid. Yes, they can get stepped on, broken and cracked. This can lead to egg eating. Once the birds taste these eggs, they never quit. So collect them as often as you can. :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X4, just take them as you find them. It is often easier to pick them up once a day later in the afternoon if you have a large flock, as most hens will have laid eggs by then and you aren't arguing with the hens still sitting on the nests that haven't laid an egg yet.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I also collect them as they are laid. I can hear from my kitchen window when they lay so I just head out there then.
