When do I remove the paper towels?

First place I went to when planning on hatching chicks was the LEARNING CENTER at the top of the page here on BYC. Then any questions not on there can be searched or asked. Makes it much easier than trying find something in a thread at first if we can remember to use the title bars.

Maybe the primer is blocking the oil. Well if they are fine then thats fine

. I only use cedar poles for the run Kinda scared to use it for anything else

We didn't really know what to do when we got started on chickens so I came to this site and looked at designs the interior is all pine, but the outside frame is ceder. Happy , it ain't caused no trouble.

A quick note on the paper towels - if the waterer is on the ground, make sure that the chicks can't flip the paper towels over so an edge is dipped into the waterer... the wicking effect will empty the water into the bedding in short order. Even when it looked like there was no way to have it happen again, they managed to flip a towel from the middle of the brooder into the waterer.

Don't worry about cedar siding or buildings. It is the high surface area of the shavings which allows the phenols to be released that damages the respiratory linings of the chicks. A cedar shed should be fine once aired out.
