When do pure bred RIR start laying eggs?

Thank you for responding. Now I am happy because I also have Ameraucanas but I think the RIR will lay first. by squatting you just mean them spreading out their legs and low to the ground?

Yes... not to sound gross, but that is a submissive “I want you to mount me and fertilize my egg” sign. I wouldn’t stress it, happy chickens lay eggs and if your chickens are happy and well taken care of, it will happen! But 12 weeks is definitely too early. I have a group of 16 week old pullets and they don’t lay yet, but they should start within the next month or so.

If they are Heritage Rhode Island Reds they will typically lay later than hatchery Rhode Island Reds. I think 20-24 weeks is pretty normal, but some start earlier or wait longer. Their combs and wattles will turn bright red before they start laying as well.
