Do they always lay early in the morning? Or does it vary? And do they always lay in their nest box or do you have ones that lay elsewhere?

Our RIR Red just laid her first egg yesterday and I found it early in the morning. Today's was later mid-morning. I know after reading that it takes about 26ish hours to create an egg so it'll be fun to see if she lays mostly in the mornings or if she'll be an afternoon layer. So fun learning more about these girls!! Never knew I'd be so excited and proud after getting these first two eggs. I almost feel like she needs a party in celebration!

We had our first eggs a few weeks ago. The 25 hour thing does seem to be true as so far the first two layers have gone a little later each day. Then the first one laid at about 15:30 then missed a day and the next day there was a fresh (still warm) egg in the nesting box in their house at 7:00 so it was like she had "re-set"!!
We did have a sort of party with the first egg. We cooked the 38g egg and all four of us ceremoniously ate it together, each of us (4) getting a teeny mouthful!

Exactly... new formation begins with a yolk released shortly after an egg is laid, so they lay bit later each day.
Once it's pretty late in the day that an egg is laid a new yolk is not released until the following day..reset!
Some birds don't lay every day anyway...but most mine lay between 9-10 and 3-4.

Great info! Thanks. First day she layed early morning, next mid morning, and today noontime. The kids LOVE that it's been different every time and since today was the first day of school and a half day they got a surprise when they came home. Seriously love watching their faces light up when they find another one!
