When does your (kids') school start?

DS starts 1st grade the 31st, I start college next tuesday (the 25th). My DS had half an hour (as a minimum and he's bright!) of homework four out of five nights every week last year in KINDERGARTEN! Trying to squeeze that in between the time he got off the bus and got a snack and got ready and headed off to fb practice...was nearly IMPOSSIBLE and of COURSE the night he didnt have homework was ALWAYS the night he didnt have football! go figure. Either way, that was way more homework than I had in Kindergarten or even first grade!

I don't give my students homework. I see it as a waste of time, now if they don't finish something in class, that's thier time management, but I refuse to send home stacks of busy work.

saddina will you move to PA please! :) LOL

Lol, I'll consider it... truth is they've done studies showing why homework doesn't work over and over and teachers still give it because parents still expect it. way I see it I'm paid to teach them, not send them home with a bunch of stuff for the parents to have to monotor. I'm far more happier if my kids can play softball, or heck, even nintendo instead of sitting at a table thinking how much they dislike school.

Mr Saddi doesn't give his Jr High classes it either, some of the parents worry about that, but the kids are far happier, and still get the material down.

that is VERY true! I will be the first to admit that I could NEVER be a teacher because I'm not patient enough and I'm too much of a perfectionist... I find it hard to believe I'm the only parent out there so I'd think it would be more hurtful than beneficial to send homework home with kids to parents like that. Instead of him learning, he just gets frusterated and angry at me, and I lose patience and get angry at him and we both resent homework time that's simply buys work from what they've done in class! I liked homework when I was in school and had no problems doing it, but I was a smart kid and neither of my parents are brilliant and I always knew I was on my own with my homework... which was fine and worked out but now they send homework home that is impossible for them to do alone and even send instruction sheets home that the kids cant even READ! It's just so frusterating! (sorry about the short vent :)
