When eggs get cold?

Hi, I'm new to this but the way I always understood it was that once the egg was laid if you didn't keep it warm then it would die inside. Is this true or am I wrong. I see people who pick up eggs from other people or get them through the mail. Do they stay warm the whole time? Just Curious. Thanks, Justin.

Eggs do not have to be kept warm as soon as they are laid so long as the eggs do not freeze. The ideal temp to store them before incubation is between 50 and 70 degrees for the best hatching rates. They can be stored for 7 days and still incubate well.
