This is the way i do it as wellI hatch Silkie eggs too! I candle first on day 10 that way I know for sure which eggs are developing and which ones I need to pull. The second time I candle is day 18 right before they go into lockdown so I can see their progress and if there were any quitters along the way.![]()

Lockdown can be a bit harder to tell because most of the chicks getting ready to hatch will fill up most of the egg except the air cell and you will see some veining still. One thing you can look for is a blood ring, that is one sign that you have a quitter. Another is if you have a big dark blob with NO veining but you have to be careful pulling these because it may appear like a quitter but actually be a chick ready to hatch. If you're unsure, then I'd wait a little longer to pull it. The main way you can tell if there is active development is veining and movement. I think it's really cool when I candle and I see the chick moving. That's some of the ways I tell, if you're ever unsure, it's always better to be on the safe side and candle again later to see if it has made any progress or if it is indeed a quitter. How can you tell if you ha e quitters on lockdown day ? You get better with experience. For you just starting out I suggest you look for clear eggs at lockdown and pull those. Those are the most obvious, they haven't really developed at all. Don't push it the first time. How can you tell if you ha e quitters on lockdown day ? I don't know what to look for.
