When Should I candle?

I've given up candling at all until (maybe) Day 18. And even then I just look; I take no action based on my candling; it just gives me a better idea of how many I think will hatch.

Seems to me it reduces the stress on the eggs if I just leave the bator closed for those first 18 days. (I syringe water in through clear tubing to keep the humidity up.)

I had one batch of shipped eggs that were old and the smell was sufficient to let me know to get rid of them before there was any danger of explosion.

Don't get me wrong, I think candling is cool, and I love seeing pictures of candled eggs, but my skills were such that it didn't seem to give me any particularly useful information. Either they were gonna hatch or they weren't gonna hatch, and nothing I could find by candling was going to change that.
