When should I expect eggs?

They are in a run, We are first time chicken owners so we went a little overboard with the size of their coop and run. We wanted them to have a comfortable home, but I am worried that we made everything too big. Since we only have 4 girls and 1 guy could the size of the coop or run be a problem?
Bigger is better! Chicken math...... I'll bet by next summer you have 10 hens, at least! This is the most wholesome addiction you'll ever have, so don't worry about it.

As noted above the egg song is one, there's also certain "laying" sounds that some hens might make, though you'd have to be pretty close and listening for it to hear them. It's like a soft chatter to themselves while in the process of laying.
My leghorns make a murderous SCREECH while they are in the nest box -- worst. egg song. ever.

My Jersey Giant had the sweet little chatter sound you're referring to.

Haha, I believe you about them being the most wholesome addiction, I will definitely be getting more hens, the 4 I have now plus our roo are so sweet and know their names as well.

The messing of the nests is a good sign...but even then, it's hard to wait.

Here's how to tell...

Thank you so much for the information and I will take some pics.

Oh my word everyone, I just got my first egg, and it looks like it is perfect!!! I dont know which one layed it but I heard my girls and my roo making sounds I had never heard before. I was afraid something was in their run or coop. I ran out to check and they were all fine then I remembered someone told me about the chicken laying song so I looked in the coop and sure enough found a beautiful brown egg on the floor right under the edge of one of the nesting boxes! I am so excited its crazy! Should I expect my other girls to start laying soon? Also is it normal for them to lay so late in the day, it was around 3 pm?

Yes! Google "Egg Song" and you'll hear it -- it's quite distinctive. Mine usually laid their first eggs within two weeks after they began "squatting" for me, so you should get some eggs any day.

Egg Song is also similar to the "Danger from the skies" cry that our lead hen makes when we have hawks swooping overhead. My boyfriend still can't tell the difference, and rushes outside to "defend his harem". :)
I heard them making noise I had never heard before and I was actually worried about a predator but they were all fine so I remembered you telling me about the song and sure enough I got my first egg!!!! I'm so happy crazy!!
