We wound up with at least one rooster in our bunch of chickens that we bought this year. He turned 11 weeks old yesterday and is now crowing like mad. Since we live in town, roosters are not allowed by the City and probably aren't appreciated by our neighbors, so he's going to become dinner for our family before long. I weighed him last night, and he's just under 3 pounds, obviously not very hefty yet. I think all of our BO pullets weigh more than he does at this point, but that's beside the point. When is the optimal time in terms of tenderness and what is the optimal weight for meatiness for butchering this little guy? Has he reached optimal weight since BR's don't get very big?
