When should I put a safety hole in a call duck egg?

I've always done it as soon as I see they've internally pipped. It's always worked out well for me.
I do this with mine as well.
I've had too many internally pip and then die without ever externally pipping.
That is all I do for about the next 24 hours. If nothing on their own by then I proceed. Lots of times I feel like the extra oxygen gives them enough time to go ahead and externally pip on their own and hatch themselves from there.

Good luck! Hopefully one of the ladies I tagged can chime in as well.

Keep us updated!
So far on a update, I decided not to put a safety hole in. I candled again and it didn't look like it internally pipped, but I am tempted to just add one now that it is day 27 and since its my first time really being involved with the lockdown part of the egg

I have found it to be completely useless to do anything whatsoever if it does not internally pip on its own first. I would wait until you know for sure it has internally pipped before adding a safety hole. Also with mine they usually only start the hatching proccess on or around day 26 and it can take a couple days for them to complete the hatch.
If I were you I would not get my panties in a wad just yet. 😋

another update for if anyone is interested, I saw all 4 eggs had internally pipped during the night/day and I made safety holes. Unfortunately I have VERY shaky hands so I myself cannot make safety holes, well, safely. So I had help and I guided them through the process, but I will probably be ok for when I do the actual assisted hatching. All 4 eggs seem healthy and happy and I heard one of them! I also believe they are all positioned correctly

This is good.
I just flipped over to your other thread you had started and saw you were concerned about opening the incubator.
Of course you don't want to just be opening it for no good reason at all, but it is not a complete disaster causing you to have shrink wrapping and all the major problems like you hear about all the time.
Those of us who have incubated and hatched calls on a regular basis can testify to this.
Get in there and do what you need to do and get out, watch your humidity levels after a few minutes of it being closed back up and add more water if it has dropped too low.
I do not believe I've had a single case of true shrink wrapping and I am in my incubator a lot during lockdown checking for internal pips and doing safety holes.

Thanks, I really appreciate that, I have heard that opening up the incubator is just going to ruin anything, so its nice to hear that. I really appreciate the advice and I hope everything goes smoothly!
