When should I start to feed layers feed?

I don't use layer feed at all. I use an All Flock and add a container of oyster shells to the run. The All Flock is higher in protein which I like and the cost is about the same as layer feed. All Flock is only low in calcium. If the chickens need more calcium they naturally will eat the oyster shells. Feeding All Flock means that I don't have to worry about birds that are not old enough to lay eating the layer feed. I also don't worry about the roosters getting too much calcium.

You can start feeding layer, if you wish, according to the instructions on the bag (usually they say 16 to 18 weeks), OR after you start getting eggs (which is my preference), OR you can stay on grower/all flock and supplement calcium on the side.

Will chickens that are too young to have calcium eat the oyster shell?

They may sample it but shouldn't eat large amounts.

If you have a local feed store, you could put them on what I get, which I'm assuming is an all flock type food. It's called Chick Grow Lay by Bryant. It's very cost effective, a good all round product for everyone of all ages M/F in your flock. 👍
Thank you! Yes, we do have a local feed store. I think the layers feed is around $2 per kg (AU), is this cheap? :)
