When should my chicks start laying eggs?

5-6 months is pretty average but some don't start until later, even up to 10 months. I usually cull if a bird has not started to lay by 10 months.

I had 7 (now 6 courtesy of a hawk) and they are all different breeds. They started laying at 19 weeks (sex link) and the last one laid at 24 weeks. (sicilian buttercup)

I've had them start at 32+ weeks...you really don't want them to begin TOO soon (unless they are a production breed), because early laying can cause issues later, such as prolapse. If chickens teach you anything...it's patience!
