Earlier this summer I had read somewhere in the forum that when you transition your chicks to their coop the nesting boxes should be blocked off so that they didn't just sit and poop in them. They have adjusted and are very comfortable in their coop and with their surroundings. Is it okay to open the nesting boxes and add straw?

I would wait to add nesting material til they are nearing age to lay so they won't sleep/poop in the nests.
The reason people say to keep them closed before pullets are ready to lay eggs is the same reason.

My nest boxes were open from day 1 when chicks moved in at 5 weeks old. Added nesting material when they were showing teenage hormonal signs of maturation so they would investigate and get the idea.

If yours are getting of age, then go ahead and open and dress out the nests.
