When someone STEALS your medication.

Nurses absolutely can get fired for it. There are no rules against it. When discovered it is reported to the state Nurses Association and they will put them into either a program either inpatient, outpatient or both. Depends on the employer if they are willing to work with them and allow them to continue to work or not. But, Nobody can make the employer keep them employed. That is a liability the employer must decide if they're willing to take. And you're right, second time around and you lose the license!

To the OP, Sorry you had to experience human nature in one of it's lowest forms!

This is a huge problem in the health care industry. But its also a huge problem in general. Did you know the basis of most wars is over opium farming? (its the source of all narcotics)

Our in-town pharmacy was family owned and operated for 3 generations, but was closed last year because of illegal vicodin trafficking, the youngest pharmacist was an addict. It was in the newspaper all year, he stole and resold hundreds of thousands $$ worth of narcotics. My heart is very sad over this, we relied on that pharmacy to keep our son breathing, but now its hard for us to believe or trust anybody.

I am a nurse, I have known nurses who got caught stealing narcs. I dont' know if there's any way to accurately tell if a nurse is "one of those". I was always shocked at who got caught, I would never have guessed. Besides, I am so busy when working, the last thing I'll do is steal precious TIME to watch other nurses. That's probably how they get away with it for so long, there's no way to police these people when they want to steal, everybody else around them is busy taking care of the sick and injured.

I'VE ALSO NOTICED MY PATIENTS ON NARCOTICS GET SLOPPY AND FORGETFUL AFTER A FEW DAYS. For your own safety, a lock box with a clear record of which pills you took and when, like on a calendar, would be a very good idea. In the hospital the nurses use a M.A.R. (medication administration record) that has to be signed, timed and dated for EACH PILL, because its so easy to make a mistake, double dose, forget a med......I am sure the majority of overdoses at home are mistakes related to foggy thinking.....we're only human, and narcotics make us very dull to reality. Though I am very sorry somebody stole your pills, this thread did point out a very good suggestion of the lock box anyways, while you're in need of so many medications to heal from your surgery, just for your own safety! And don't forget those antibiotics!!! There should be NONE left after the last date!!!

I think calling all the work places and notifying them that you are missing pills is a great idea.

I do NOT get the whole pain killer addiction. If you want to go to sleep or get fuzzy take a benadryl! We still have pain killers from when my husband had his knee surgery two years ago. I need to take them to a police station drop box. I did learn to put them away where no one can find them after having a party though. Sometimes people just bite.

I don't have any advice but I'm sorry to hear that someone might have stolen your meds. That's really, really low. I hope you heal up soon!

I (thankfully... knocks on wood) don't need any prescription meds but if were in some of ya'lls shoes, I'd put some horse strength laxatives in the pill bottles and stash the real stuff somewhere else.

If I take benadryl, I'd be bouncing off the walls.
It doesn't make me sleepy, it makes me clean my house from top to bottom, repeatedly. Just sayin'.

Want to come over? I have Benadryl.

I have had the same thing happen. DW decided we would help her sister and new husband out. They came to stay with us. I have A bad nerve in my back aswell as other painful problems. We kept our meds in the kitchen cabinet. easy to get to in the morning. I noticed the bottle looked a lil short. Counted and was missing 8. next day missing another 6. I asked DW if she had been taking them for her shoulder and neck. NOPE! I told her what I suspected and she watched me count them. Put them back in the same place. Next day missing 6. I moved them to the bedroom and hid them in the dresser. Guess what. More missing the next day! Not only stealing my meds but snooping through our drawers too! I was furious!!! I was going to kick them out right then and there. middle of the night new baby and all. I let you come stay here for free and this is what I get in return? Well DW wouldn't let me. She asked DS next day. OH NO! How dare you accuse us of this! NO ONE else had been in the house!
So I just started carring the med with me at all times. Never left it in the house. even now I still carry my meds with me at all times. I have a special bag nothing but meds and vitamins. If I ever got stopped I'm sure to get some looks from the cop! LOL But they are all mine with my name on them. I even carry the scrip for the pain med injections, because of the syringes. Just in case! Better safe than sorry! To this day they both still deny it. But Oh well lesson learned. Keep the good stuff locked up! They will find it if given the chance. And yes alot of the meds are worth alot of money on the street. $3-$8 per pill.

Good luck and God Bless!

Added: I know your pain in more than one way! LOL

I have had both knees replaced and I know how badly you need those meds...nothing as dispicable as a thief but especially meds someone needs...count 'em and secure 'em...I live alone but have a lot of company so I keep close track of the narcotics...addicts can't help themselves but I would still hit one with a big stick if I caught them with their hand in my meds...
