Hi, we have 5 very hearty (like play in the snow and ice hearty) White Leghorn hens in very far north Texas (almost OK), and I finished their redesigned chicken coop just in time for this polar weather we are having. I've never closed the small door to the coop before, but with the north wind blowing the temps down to single digits, should I close them into the coop to keep them warm?

If the coop door faces North, you may want to shut it. Otherwise, I would leave it open during the day.

If there is going to be a lot of wind, you will want to shut the coop door. Chickens lose a lot of heat where there is wind.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X4, depends on where the wind is blowing from, you can also put up some sort of wind break a foot or two in front of the door, piece of plywood, bales of straw etc.

Alright

I would close and lock the door every night for safety
