When To Give Chickens Table Scraps?

Hey there! I was wondering when I’m able to give my chickens table scraps? I looked online and it said 3-4 months, but nothing else. My chickens are going to be 12 weeks old tomorrow, and I have SLW, GLW, BPR, Leghorns, Ameraucanas, if that helps

You can actually provide any table scraps that chickens can eat after about a week, or even younger. Just be sure to provide chick-sized grit and to provide the right size food. (Either way too big too swallow, so they have to peck it into bits, or cut it up small enough for no choking hazard.)

Make sure that 90% or more of their diet is their chick feed, and then add some goodies, and grit, absolutely.

Mother hens will start feeding chicks scraps from a very young age, a week old max. I follow their example.

I brood inside, so I'm mother hen.
I only give my Chicks a Medicated feed for 10 weeks, then limited treats, mostly Scratch Grains.

Of course when they go outside at 5 weeks old they'll have access to grass, weeds, bugs and worms.
I rarely have kitchen scraps, most veggies here are frozen and ready to use, but none till 10 weeks. GC

Remember that 10% of their diet is an extremely SMALL amount.
Think tablespoon full for a full grown bird.
WAY less for a young bird.


I would say don't ever feed scraps or treats...your birds will be healthier for it if they stay on a complete balanced diet.

Thank you! I give them a little bit of kale every once in a while, but not a lot. Is that ok? They always have access to their chick feed.

A little bit should be ok.
Once in a while...not daily.
