Hi a newbie here 8 baby chick-lets that will be 5 weeks old this coming Sunday the18th. I keep reading and reading when to introduce
them to our (gifted to us) 2 full grown sweet as can be Plymouth rocks? We asked at the feed store and one person said 5 weeks,
another 4 weeks and still another 8 weeks. Our coup is about 12 by 12 and 8ft tall with 8 boxes for egg laying, 2 roosts and an old
wooden ladder leaned against a wall that the girls seem to like. They have a fenced in run about 12 ft by 20 ft long outside. But the
height is only about 4 feet or so high. We do have an outdoor banner that moves in the wind and a few child pin wheels in the ground
and attached to the fence to hopefully help keep the predators away. The two older girls are sweet as can be and go into the coup at night by themselves. Out of the 8 babies 2 are little silkies and one in fact is tiny. She (hopefully) eats well and seems to be thriving but compared to the other birds she is about half the size. Would it be wish to put the 6 bantams out first and keep the silkies inside the broader a few
weeks longer or should I just wait til the 8 weeks and put them all out at once?
Thank you for any solid advice you can give to me.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Since your younger ones are all bantams? I would wait until they are about as big as they are going to get (~4 months) and then introduce them gradually, a period of time separated by wire usually works well, ie if you can separate your coop/run or put the younger chicks in a cage inside. That gives them time to get used to each other and kind of establish a pecking order. There is a good article in the Learning Center on combining flocks https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock With the Silkies, you may have to keep them separated all the time, they are often picked on in mixed flocks and if you have a tiny one, keep a close eye on it to see how it gets along...usually standards and bantams will get along as long as you are not crowded for space, but watch that small ones especially are not being kept away from the food and water. Your older girls may be very sweet, but that is not guarantee how they will act with new chickens. With putting them in the coop itself (separated) usually chicks are fully feathered by 6 weeks or so and don't need extra heat as long as you don't get a cold snap, with the small Silkies again, you could keep them in the brooder longer or just keep an eye on them since their feathers aren't normal and if they act cold you may need to supplement heat for them.

Thank you, I am now looking for our metal dog crate to try and separated the ban tums when we introduce them, In the meantime we had bought
a used baby playpen for puppies last summer and I think we will switch them from the cardboard broader box to that with lots of news paper
in the bottom and put some screening over the top in case someone gets the urge to fly. The playpen is twice the size as the box and they
will be able to see out all 4 sides. I keep them inside in my sewing room with the door closed as we have 4 cats. And we also keep TV on
for them all day long to get used to human voices when we are not in there. I had on the home shopping channel the other day and I think
they all got together and bought some lipstick. Ha ha.....Thank you all for some good advice.

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the new babies! Yes, give them time to grow a few months before mixing. Keep them separate but within the flock for several weeks so everybody gets acquainted from behind wire. After a few weeks like this, mixing day usually goes fairly well. Just keep an eye on everybody closely that day and the rest of the week and always intervene if it turns bloody.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Thanks! They were transferred into the baby playpen last night and they seem to love it as they can see out from the sides now. They are still inside the house in my sewing room. Last nght
we shut off the heat lamp and they were not all huddled together this morning. They will be 5 weeks old Sunday. I love my little chicklets!
