When to name chicks

Basically when their name is "revealed" to me?

All chickens have personalities, some more than others. I like it when I'm looking at them and their name just comes to me. Bunny, my little while silkie hen, got named the day she hopped around the brooder. Sometimes I use a "theme" for those being raised together. One batch had the last name of 'pants'.. so I had Fancypants, Dangerpants, and Prissypants. They catch on pretty quick to their names and some will even run across the yard when called. It's cute to watch them run.

I understand about losses so I understand why some might hold off naming them. For me, though, some birds have long lives.. some very short. So... while they are here.. I try to give them the best life they can have. I try to let them know that they matter.

Mine all ended up with names, finally, but I have 3 Barred Rocks and they are identical, so they are collectively called "the triplets", original, I know.

I named ours the first day. I probably shouldn't have but I couldn't resist, I love naming things. But since it's just impossible to match names to personalities that way I go by appearance. We did ended up "retiring" the name Blossom though because both birds given that name ended up passing away.

This batch of chicks I tried to wait a little longer to name them. I think at some point they'll let you know what they should be named. I had a 2 day old Speckled Sussex that was sitting on my chest. She jumped up and pecked my upper lip, drawing blood. She got named right there (Trex...as in T-Rex)...lol. One of my buff orpington chicks has a knack for escaping netting (like burrowing under it, walking through the wrap around, etc.) She just got named Houdini.

I'd give 'em a little time to develop their personalities and I'm sure the names will come to you!

I'm raising my first set of chicks and they are about 2 weeks old. I had a theme picked out (I have eight and they were going to be Snow White and the 7 Dwarves), but none of the names seemed right. Only two of them have 'revealed' their name to me so far! So I have a Peaches (a Rhode Island Red who had the same coloring of a ripe peach when I brought her home and is super affectionate - my profile pic) and Loki, a Silver Laced Wyandotte who is a bit of a bully and fully earned her name when she pecked my yellow lab (named Thor) on his nose.

I'm seeing some personalities emerging so I'm sure their names will come with time.

Our 3 wyandotte chicks were named around 2-3 weeks old.. My hubby named one mother duck shes the biggest of the 3.. Then we have Lacey and our smallest chick is Bird however were currently thinking Bird is a rooster so will wait couple more weeks to make sure then try to rehome him. Once we move to acreage ill be getting more but for now just 2-3 will do

I've been doing rescue for so many years and have had to name so many dogs & cats that I am slowing down - I only named 2 of my chickens. I let friends pick names and they did a great job and they feel like they are mom & dad to the ones they named! I have changed my rooster's name 3 times os far, nothing seems to fit him.
