how do you know when your veggies/fruit are ready to pick?

Really varies so a complicated question. What veggies and fruits? Eventually you just get a feel and experienced about it and some things are obvious like color, size, change in leaves or covering. If you have a specific one pops up, like last year I wondered about a certain cantelope so just googled "cantelope, when to harvest" and it told me all I needed to hear.
