When traps aren't the answer...

I agree with taking the domestics to AC. I got coons with just cantelope, apples, peanut butter with BOSS on it.I just put a marshmallow in last night,so we will see if I got anything.

It takes 2-3 big dogs to kill a coon. They have to grab from each end and play "tug-o-war" with it

. If you do trap it and don't want to shoot it, 2 big dogs that are... ahem, energetic and very playful would take care of the problem if they were there when you let it out. The bad thing is, you would have to clean up the mess. :\\ My 2 dogs absolutely destroyed one of my live catch traps to get to a coon once. Coon got a taste of his own fury that time.

I had a problem this month too. I think I lost like 14 young ducks and a broody hen.

I would have bet moola mine was foxes, only I discovered the scat was coon. I had leg traps set up, box traps, a barrel trap, nothing. Couldn't even see what was taking mine and I was having losses in broad daylight too!

My final straw was when they dug up my dead Kitty we had to have PTS a few weeks ago.

I think I may have gotten them, but I used, ah, unconventional methods. I don't have tons of feral cats/dogs here either.

I'd try using live bait and leg traps (Put the bait into something secure!)

Maybe tell your neighbors with the wandering kitties/dogs that you are using leg traps and they need to keep their animals penned up for the night. You can also get paw hold traps which are supposed to not injure what they catch.

They sell a HUGE coyote trap with a bait box at TS, I sure wish I could afford it!

Some raccoons are pretty easy to trap, but some get really trap savvy and are hard to get. That's a big reason that, once you get one, you don't turn it loose to become someone else's problem. We all have our own techniques and methods. Some might work better than others on certain raccoons, but all that matters is that the method works on the raccoon you are after.

Since you wanted to know how some of us do it, I'll go through mine. I wired my trap to a piece of plywood to stabilize it. I don't like them turning it over, either to get at the bait or
after they are inside trying to get out. Then I built a sort of box that fits over the trap. The only way to the bait is through the front door of the trap. I also figure if I ever get a skunk, this box over it might give me a bit of an advantage dealing with it.

I don't know any bait that only attracts raccoons. Since raccoons will eat about anything, there is probably something else that will eat about anything that you use. I've been successful using a spoonful of peanut butter wrapped up in a paper towel. I got a feral cat once with that. The last time I used a couple of marshmallows and poured some chicken feed in the trap. Other people use other things.

I'm not saying how I do it is the best or only way to be successful. It has worked for me. Good luck with yours.

caught 4 coons in the lst 2 weeks......3 in traps and in iron sites.......
When the coons come around I will ususally just stake out the coop at night with my AR and night goggles.........

Believe me I have electric wire around the run and the coons will jump right over it.

Early July I am sitting in the garage waiting and hear a large thump on the garage roof.......next I see the tree between the garage and the coop rustle and sway........then another thump as it jumped on the coop roof...............I just waited...............in a few more minutes the girls came running out of the coop which told me the coon was inside and I got the coon with one shot.

Dont play around..they are vicious killers

by the way, the last coon I trapped, this weekend..........I didnt even have any bait in the trap.......just an empty can of tunna.......and still caught the darn thing.

Why dont you give just plane garbage a try? Like old banana peels, raw chicken, and smelly left over meat cartons. If the coon likes garbage cans, then its worth a smelly shot right?
And if your up for an all nighter, get a little air gun and gently pop the cats in the butt with it if they go near the trap.
My old neighbor had to do that, he sat on his roof with a bb gun though and just took them out one by one >.>
