i have a leghorn. i found her roaming the streets. I took her home so the cats dont get at her. i am hoping to get some eggs from her! how many eggs will she lay at a time or a day! and at what age do they start to lay. i am not sure of her age!

A hen starts laying when she's around 18-20 weeks old and will lay up to 4 years, depending. Leghorns do lay well, but I can't say how many eggs you'll get! The most you can realistically expect from a good layer is 9 eggs in 10 days. They do need a day off now and then. Just make sure you feed her properly, otherwise you won't get any eggs!

i feed my girls Layena and you can get it at the feed store/garden center. i also provide oyster shell and keep it in a bowl in their coop so they can eat it whenever they need it. it provides the calcium for their egg shells. layena has calcium in it....but i always provide extra just in case they need it. i also provide grit (crushed up rocks that you can also buy at the feed store) and this help them digest their food. i keep this in a bowl too, just like the oyster shell. i also give them table scraps from time to time which they love. good luck with her, and get her friend if possible. chickens love other chickens! congrats!

Ditto on the Layena for layers, but since Purina puts calcium in Layena no additional calcium is required, and the chickens probably won't eat it. Grit is also good thing, but if they chickens are ranging around sand and gravel they will pick up their own. BY ALL MEANS get another chicken. These are flock animals and are not happy alone.

Can you post a picture of your chicken? It would be good to know just how old she looks and if she really is a hen or not. That way people could answer your question a little more accurately. If she's too young, you don't want to feed her laying rations, it's bad for her.

We bought a chick yesterday! An Amercauna! Trying to introduce them slowly. Tomorrow I start the renovation of my daughter's clubhouse in to a coop. My daughter was so kind to donate her clubhouse to our chickens!
