Where are the bees?

Keesmom I am so sorry for your loss. Very upsetting. My boyfriend and I are starting two hives here on Long Island this year. He is taking classes, we have been reading up a storm and attending the local bee society meetings. The word is is that this winter was very hard on the bees and they are struggling to regroup for the season. Ironic thing happened the other day. He had finished painting the hives and we put them in the "Apiary" and all of a sudden a honey bee landed on the top of one. It most likely smelled the wax but it was so ironic.

We had snow here last night and pretty chilly this morning. I wish this winter would just go away already. I am on spring break and a little confused. It feels like winter break this morning. Wanted to get out there in the garden early and finish clearing leaves off beds but that will have to wait. Wanted to go riding but now the ground is icy - that will have to wait. Well I guess I will have to read my book and/or knit for a few hours.
Have a good day everyone.

Also so sorry for your loss Keesmom, I am also on Long Island and have a small beefarmer that lost 90% of her hives this winter. She is going to try to rebuild from her remaining colonies, as she thinks they are hardier stock. Makes sense to me.

Let's hope this Winter was one of those "hundred year" things. But I think this is going to be a wild weather ride this year.

P.S. Irischick -- where are you on Long Island? I'm in W. Suffolk.

Tashatu I am in Ridge.
Looking at another website that has a forum with beekeepers, there were great losses all over the U.S. due to the winter weather. Very sad.

That's terrible. I just brought home my first hive and bees. We have fairly mild winters here, so hopefully, it won't be hard on them. My problem is that we are in a severe drought here. They seem to be finding pollen, and I fed them on Sunday. Crossing my fingers.

I'm in Miller Place! I just got my first honey bees last week! I'm enchanted by them-it's a little weird. I go out and just watch them coming and going from the hive. My kids are considering an intervention!

My neighbors all have tons of flowers planted, so those will be blooming soon for them, (my area is populated with a lot of "natural" people) I am putting in my vegetables this week, so hopefully I'll get a great harvest this fall with a hive in the yard. I'll also be planting some flowers-we pulled out some small trees to plant for the bees. I'm lucky my husband is relatively indulgent when it comes to my little micro farm. :)
