Where did you get your chickens?

We have never ordered from a hatchery but plan to order from Cackle this spring. We mostly get them from breeders and the sale barn. Craigslist is a great place to look for breeders and things. I wouldn't recommend chick day (feed stores) b/c they are usually marked way up. For chicks I would not pay more than $2 each and for layers I won't pay more than $7 each.

I'd love to hatch eggs, but i think I'll try just *raising* them and then see if i think i can hatch my own. I would be really nervous that the temp or humidity would just be a little off and I'd lose them.. yeah, I think I'll stick to chicks for now.

I started with hatchery decendents. I've never personally ordered chicks from a hatchery. I ordered ducklings a couple of times. I then just one day went to a breeders house that was selling birds and I was bit by the bug. Ever since I've only bought from show breeders. I did order from a hatchery a couple times when I was raising and breeding Swedish ducks but that is just because they were getting way too impred! But that is how I got my start. Since then I've had ever breed imaginable to finally decide I like one breed. But I'm getting geared up to go to college and I'm slowing down and just getting breeds I just like. Next venture= Bantam Araucanas, Silkies, LF BBS Orps, and PIGEONS! The last one I'm excited about!!

My first chickens came from a local farm woman, who got hers from a hatchery. I've ordered eggs from Ebay (good and bad luck there), eggs from Pips&Peeps and Halo on here (awesome quality), purchased some chicks from a local feedstore, got some from a breeder friend at work, and some from a different friend, and also from Craig's List. Overall, I'm most impressed with the quality of the breeder's birds. No comparison. But if you're looking for layers, hatcheries are just fine. It all depends on what you want them for.

i always order from a hatchery, I prefer hatchery birds over any other kinds. they are pretty, good layers, and fun to watch. last year i ordered from Townline Hatchery and I would reccomend them to anyone wanting good, healthy birds. website is www.townlinehatchery.com

this year I believe i'm gonna order from cackle, maybe RIR's BO's, BR's, GC's i order new set every year to ensure the best laying possible.

I got my most recent chicks from MPC, but I got some full grown Modern games from a breeder yesterday. Personally, I like both.

You might want to take a look at the Gabbard farms page they have a higher quality set of chickens
pricy but better quality if that matters to you.
Oh by the way they only do hatching eggs

This is my first time ordering chicks too. I ordered 7 from MPC over New Years, which are due the week of 3/21. I picked them because I could get a small order, all females, & 1 of each kind that I wanted. Since I'm new to chickens, I haven't decided what breed I like best. All of mine are brown egg layers.
