Where did you get your chicks?

What's wrong with getting chickens from stores/hatcheries if all you want chickens for is eggs? I'm not a breeder and I'm not even allowed a rooster so I don't understand the attitude. My hatchery quality chickens will make me eggs and be good backyard chickens to teach my children about where their food comes from.

When I buy dogs and cats I buy from breeders pet quality not show quality animals because I have no plans to breed them either. My ocicat had a heart defect and a bone deformity. Her breeder/vet repaired her bone problem, spayed her and her parents so it wouldn't happen again and sold them as pets to loving homes. She's been a great pet for 10 years even though she's not show quality.

Hatcheries serve a purpose for some and that's fine, all I am sayin is I am just not a fan of their breeding practices and miss representations of the breeds. I just prefer to have decent stock is all.

Our first batches came from Rural King, which I think came from Ideal. Then an order from Estes. Now I'm trying to hatch my first batch in the incubator from a friend of ours.

agree i just want a breed that will produce good eggs or good meat dont care about genetics or breeding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! besides im not going to sell any of the chicks i get so whats the point of having those kinds of spendy birds here where i live in the idaho high mountains so i have my 12 or 14 aying hens and one rooster

Where I live we can only have 6 hens and No roosters. I only got 3 hens on Tuesday because we were just looking for a few eggs. Besides I could be wrong but is there a real big difference between a hatchery or a breeder? Don't both breed chickens and then sell them?

i got my 25 white leghorn chicks from Welp Hatchery. I am just starting and intending to sell eggs and chicken meat in the future, in a commercial scale. I'm in WA state and Welp is in Iowa. As much as we want to go local, there's just no local source of chicks all year round, that will support an economical venture in terms of costs, number and breed.

i am a struggling pastured farmer wannabe that needs to look at economies of scale and costs.

Ideal.
Ordered 8 "surprise females," (paid the ins for no males)
got 8, transit time 1 day (TX to LI, NY),
6 weeks later I still have 8.
Got 2 RIR, 2 Brown S/L, 2 GoldPencilled Hamburgs, and 2 Yokohamas.
I'm happy with their service, the chicks they selected, and how nice
and how patient they were on the phone for a measly $30.00 order
from an ignorant first (and likely only) timer.

If and when I need more chicks I'll definitely call Ideal.
