Where did you get your chicks?

My first chicks came from a local hatchery the second batch arrived this am from ideal they shipped 6-15 arrived at my post office this am. I'm not looking for great breeder stock just some pretty birds to give us eggs & provide sustainable meat . All my birds so far have arrived healthy & have done great the new batch too soon to tell yet but they all eating ,drinking, running around brooder so for now good. Ideal was helpful in ordering process even with changes made in order.

Local feed store, a couple local breeders, bought shipped eggs from breeders and hatched 'em, and recently ordered from Ideal Poultry. VERY happy with Ideal, and will order from them again.

I got some from craigslist, some from a couple different feed stores, some from friends, and some from eggs.

Splinty,

Where I live, we are only alowed to have 6 hens too. No roosters, thats why we had to get rid of one. So now I have 5 of them.

Only being allowed to have such a small amount is hard since they are so cute. I told my husband last night that I should have ordered the max we can have but he still insists that starting out with 3 is a good number for beginners like us.

I ordered 3 from pullets from Meyer. Lost the Brahma chick and one of the SS turned out to be a roo.
Bought 2 amberlink pullets from a farm on craigslists. She had a real operation going and I'd probably go back to her when I get more.

I ordered chicks from efowl.com and I now think they came from Cackle, because they had a Missouri postmark. I meant to order 15, the minimum, but could not resist the Top Hat special. So, 22 chicks later - they added an extra BPR and RIR. The other 5 are EEs. All are amazing, beautiful birds. I do not know what standard birds look like, but these are so much fun, and strikingly beautiful. Who'd a thought I'd EVER say this about a chicken?

If I had to do it all over again, however, I would buy locally, and not so many

We are currently hatching our first chickens from eggs. We bought them off of a breeder and off of ebayUK (we live in the UK). They are purebreeds and are going to be garden pets; Pure Chocolate Orpington Bantam, Creole Pekins, Black Belgian Barbu D'Anvers and several different colors of Polish Bantams (Silver Laced, Gold Laced, Blue, Black and White). My parents have a farm and use to get their chicks from the feed store (in Georgia, USA). They use to have run of the mill White Leghorns and were definately NOT pets. They ( the chickens and not my parents

)use to roost in the trees and poo on my head!! Occasionally they ( my parents and not the chickens

) also would hatchout some of their own chickens' eggs.

"Cackle Hatchery in Missouri."

Me too. 6 each of Silver Laced Wyandotte, Gold Laced Wyandotte and Brown Leghorns. They were great to deal with and the chicks all arrived in good shape.
