where does the loathing come from?????

I would never refer to another person as a moron myself and am frankly disappointed at the personal insults contained in many of these posts. Somehow I thought personal attacks were prohibited on this Board.

Oh, BTW, procreated is one word not two.

I think personal attacks are only meant for members of this board, not a so called journalist that knows he's ticking people off.

I think his support for voting no is barely a poorly stated argument but rather an emotional expression of distaste for the issue. Had he wanted people to vote no, he should have discussed and pointed out how the issue would affect agriculture, the cost of products these animals produce, and how increased food prices would affect so many of our population who can now barely afford to drive to work and buy food for their families. By just degrading the animal which many do and do not care for, does not put him or the proposition in a positive light and is more of a propaganda then a article of fact. That kind of statement for or against any issue is disgusting, even if it was a vote yes article. Just plain poorly crafted and could have been done better by focusing on points that would relate more to the average Joe and Jane trying to make a living.

And as a side note, personal attacks shouldn't be done on anyone one, on this board or not, as if the one being attacked ever by chance came across the post, it would shed a bad light upon the community.

i believe the prohibition against personal attacks extends only to those participating in a debate or discussion. unless you're lon allan?

The fellow is very shortsighted. He makes his living by 'screeching the chalk across the board.'

Still, I really dislike things being 'BANNED' ~~ rather, I'd prefer they were regulated. Once they ban battery cages, it will be a small jump to banning caging at all. Some of you have 'caged' setups to keep your chickens safe. Who decides when the chicken is happy?

I dislike battery chicken, hog, and veal operations as much as the next person. I just think revamping minimum space allotments would not disseminate the industry and do better by the animals.

Yes, Proposition 2 in California would oultaw the use of battery cages, veal cages, and gestation/lactation crates for sows. It would wipeout the egg industry in California and decimate a signifcant portion of the agriculture there.

Jim

Rock on. It's about time battery cages, veal crates and gestation crates are banned. Kudos to California for leading the charge.

Farmers are smart people; they'll adapt. And I, for one, would happily pay more for such products (if I ate veal or pork, which I don't) if it meant that the animals were raised humanely.

Amy

I would definitely vote NO on that proposition. While we may feel the way that commercial poultry and livestock is raised is inhumane...millions of other consumers do not feel that way and benefit from the low cost of protein in the marketplace.
While you may be happy to pay more for your meat and eggs...you can easily do that by purchasing organic, welfare-friendly products. However, there is an overwhelming majority of consumers that do not want to pay more or CANNOT pay more for their groceries.

This man makes me mad- No need to debeak the chicken if you did't crowd it- my girls don't peck me -
the dogs bite each other when they get mad- I guess next we remove teeth
How about fist from people who like to hit others.

This man should not be allowed to write for the paper with his old antiqueted (?) views on animals.

This guy just doesn't think. Or maybe he just thinks that he doesn't like chickens and neither should you. And what he doesn't like doesn't matter.

There's no question that some of the language in the column being responded to was inflammatory. So much so that I wonder if Lon Allen doesn't really support the ban on battery cages and is deliberately trying to turn people off.
By and large people who get all emotional about so-called abuse on farms are people who have no knowledge of or experience with agriculture. No one who makes their living from farming is going to abuse their livestock for the simple reason abused animals are not as productive.
Many people here see battery hens as being abused because they are not raised like pets. They're not pets, they're livestock. There's a big difference. If hens on commercial farms were raised like some people here raise their pet birds eggs would cost $25 a dozen. This is a number I picked out of the air to make a point-don't ask for my data, maybe they'd only cost $20 a dozen. They'd certainly be much more than they are now.
Some here lament the fact that battery hens are processed for food when they reach the end of their productive cycle. Imagine the cost of maintaining a flock of 250,000 birds through a molt never mind maintaining them until they die of old age. $25 a dozen is beginning to sound like it might be too low an estimate.
Then there's the assertion that battery hens aren't allowed to live a "natural" life. Modern day chickens have been developed from Jungle Fowl over literally thousands of years-they have no "natural"life. Flocks of wild Cherry Eggers never roamed the plains of Africa! Turn a flock of leghorns loose to live on their own "naturally" and they'll all be dead in no time.
If you want to keep three chickens as pets, name them, and bury them when they die of old age fine.
If you want to put them in diapers and bring them in your house, wierd but also fine. None of that has anything to do with agriculture and there's the problem. People with chickens in diapers wanting to dictate farming methods to actual farmers.
Just my opiniion, I could be wrong.

I agree, NYREDS!

I don't agree with the author of the article on his views, but we're all entitled to our own opinions.

If you want commercial farmers to change their ways, then stop buying their products. Buy only organic, or from local markets/farms - but don't complain about the cost involved.
