Question for you: how do you know when you have an "early dead"? I candled my chicken eggs on day 10 and three were obviously clear. I considered candling before lockdown but in the end I didn't because I didn't know how to tell if they were live or not. Obviously if I see movement, they're alive. But if I don't see movement, I figure they could be just sleeping, and I wouldn't want to risk throwing them away just in case....perhaps my light wasn't strong enough? I could see inside well enough to see the egg shell was full but couldn't make out any actual details.

I got 10 bantam cochin babies (need more girls) does that count?? It was 100% hatch for shipped eggs...now let's pray for girls so I won't be calling the boys gremlins LOL

when you candle at lockdown day

you will see an egg that has a black form inside floating in a liquid , like water , this is an early dead.

if you compare this egg to the others that are good you will see the good ones are all black with an empty space on the rounded side of the egg

Well I set 60 eggs and ended up with 30 chicks. The incubator blew up and I had to sort of rig something at the last minute. When it started to go out it shot up to 110* and then down to 80 for a few hours. I had like 35 hatch, 3 duds, 5 died, 2 died early on, and the bator problems killed the rest. I have 30 little chicks so I am not as mad as I was. I still got a few more very much needed breeders though so I am happy.

OUt of 104 set eggs. 84 had been lightly refrigerated and some were as old as 3 weeks. I hatched 65 and another 16 from other eggs. so 81 hatched, I culled 4 that were't going to make it. So I have 77 babies from my 1/11 hatch.

I held my breath the whole hatch expecting explosions, didn't happen.
