I like the idea of the south side of the apple tree. And within a clear shot from the house. With all the cover you have lots of sneaky things just have to be in there.

I would build it around the apple tree

My peeps love the oak in their run, and it provides shade. They would kill for low lying apple tree branches to roost in.

I have trees on the south side of the coop. The sun warms it as it rises in the morning, the trees block the sun in the summer as the sun moves across the sky in the middle of the day. I'm in the mountains in So. Cal. so we worry more about the heat than the cold. I like having trees right outside the door. They stay under the trees for the most part. Have not lost one yet to an overhead predator.
(I have nothing on the north or east side of the coop/run right now.) Wava , I like your open coop and run. It's a nice set up for your region.

Mine is about 30 feet from the front porch, under a tree and a security light. The security light was already there and I figured it would help deter predators. The tree is for shade, of course. I wanted it close to the house for predator deterrence and also for ease of care. I have a barn, but it's across the creek and I didn't want the chickens that far away from me.

Mine is on the south end of our yard. It gets tons of shade from our trees and in the evening from the neighbors trees. I put windows in the south sides of the coops to catch any sun in the winter.

My vote is shade.

Shade. But around here any tree is fair game for racoons to climb and then jump down into the chicken yard and have lunch. Just keep that in mind if your chickens are under the tree. Here I plan to fence the overhanging trees in with electric wire to keep the racoons out of them...would rather fence in trees than cut down limbs to keep the racoons away.
Cheers,
N. VA.

mine is about 100' from my back door next to my barn and shaded by large walnut trees from about noon til sunset
