Where there's smoke, there's... ducklings?

I had an interesting morning. I was woken early by one of the dogs, who kept jumping on me and whining. Not her normal routine.

So, I got up, and quickly realized that I could smell smoke. I ran downstairs and there was smoke pouring from our makeshift brooder full of week old ducklings.

Somehow, the lamp fell into it. How that happened with a long pole run through its mounting ring across the top of the brooder is something of a mystery.

Anyway, the bedding was smoldering up a storm and the downstairs was full of smoke. Lovely.

I transferred the ducklings into a bucket (thankfully the light didn't trap any of them), wet down the bedding, and went outside for a while with all the critters to let the smoke clear.

It seems nobody is worse for the wear and the ducklings are back in their tub, with the addition of a chain going from the light to the ceiling.

Next time, I won't be so easily satisfied that there is no way for the light to fall in.

What a scary way to wake up.

So very glad that a smoke filled lower floor was all you had to deal with.

Give your pup an extra pat and cookie for being so good.

That's a good warning for everyone else. We have a bunch of extra window screens around the house that I rest on top of the brooder and put the light on top of that. If the case of chicks it also keeps them from flying out.

Heh. She got eggs and cheese for breakfast. World's happiest dog.

(Although I will shortly be dealing with fumes of a different sort.)

HAHAHAHA! Yeah...I used to have a Great Dane, he could clear a room! lol

So glad everything turned out well, such a good dog!

Yay, doggie hero!

For what it's worth, I had a reinforced hardware cloth section across the top of the brooder and I put the heat lamps on that. This also provided a little protection should a bulb (two were ceramic, two were light bulbs) pop.
