I've used zip ties for chicks ---- you just cut them off and put a bigger one on every week or two.

For adults I got a set of adjustable aluminum bands from ketchum http://www.ketchummfg.com/ and I've been very happy with them. Super fast shipping even on personalized items (I had my name put on mine). I put them on their adult size around 4 months of age.

Alternately you could use wing bands, which you can put on chicks and they stay on all their life. Or toe punching, which is done to chicks and stays for their whole life as well.

I am interested in putting leg bands on my LF Light Brahmas chicks and would like to beable to start this from day one. What size do I need? How tight do i put them? Does this cause pecking between chicks and chickens? Thanks

I get mine from cutler supply. You can get an assorted colors from them, but NOT assorted sizes. Here is the deal though, you can't buy one size. I bought 4 different sizes so I can change sizes as they grow. I like the color springs the best. I have some numbered bandettes but only for my bigger birds. I use the color springs when they are young. I bought 4, 6, 8, 10 color springs and change up every 3 weeks.

They peck at it themselves at first, but then forget or get use to it. Size 4 only lasts from day 1 to 3 weeks. I scratched a light brahmas foot taking one off today, gotta be careful.

I use zip ties on my wyandottes also. Cheap!!! Non toxic markers on the lighter color chicks works ok until they can wear a zip tie around 12 wks.
