Hi all, I'm new here and to chickens! I was given one hen from a friend and I now want get her some "company". I'm looking for laying hens about her age (5-6 months). Do I buy from a hatchery or a local feed store?

Local feed stores usually only have new born chicks....
Some Hatcheries will sell "starter pullets" which are 16-17 weeks old when they ship to you...with this there are usually only 3 types that you can get that are starter.

The other thing you can do is look for swap meets and poultry auctions in your area...also papers and adds for those selling and you can place one on free sites for wanting...
Also go to the "want" section here on BYC to ask or the "Where am I? Where are you!" section to ask people in your state...

Best Wishes,
Laura

Your best bet is to put your state in your title so members that are near you that may have what you are looking for can quickly respond. Something like
Where to buy 5-6 month pullet in Colorado.

Welcome to BYC.

There is going to be a sell/swap near you in August or Sept. A thread has been started for it.

I may have something to sell right now if you want only 2 or 3 pullets. Depending on what you are looking for in breeds. I have sold out pretty quickly this year and do not have too much left.
PM if interested.

I am having the same issue..have been looking for Bantam Pullets (2 or 3) and have had No luck.....so let me know if you find a good site
