Where to find thermostatistic control thingys???

Hi. In really cold weather I use ceramic heat lamps for my feathered friends but am always having to shut them on if too cold and off if too warm. This includes visits to the switch throughout the night. I would like to buy some kind of thermostatic control so that I can set a temp where the heat would come on and set a temp where it will turn off..

For those of you that have those wondrous gadgets, where did you get them? And have you found them to be reliable? (I don't want to freeze or roast anybody

).

I know what you are talking about I just dont know the name of it either. You should be able to get them at your local hardware store or nearest Lowe's, Menards maybe Tractor Supply store.

Thanks - it's mysterious but so far I have struck out at such places...the staff look at me like I have 3 heads when I describe what I'm looking for! Maybe someone here will have an on line source........

You need a timer. Lowe's has them for about $6. They are found in the lighting section.

Thanks. I've run across timers tho not yet something that is triggered on and off by temps (rather than time).....
I know a lot of people on BYC reference them so at least I know they exist out there somewhere in the hinterlands!

Thanks for helping with this BYC'ers, my father has a control that turns a lightbulb on when the temp drops down to a certain temperature, but I was not sure this was what was needed.

I think what you're looking for is a switch that plugs into an outlet and turns the heater on when the temp gets near zero. Most hardware stores have them. But be very careful please, ceramic heaters are useful if you can create a metal grille around them at least 4" away - birds are often attracted and will make contact especially if they're very cold.
