They were all very healthy and looked good, like someone intended to take care of them but then just couldn't.

Or they figured their unplanned, unwanted, litter would be taken care of at the vet.

A black kitty. Very skittish. I am more than happy to have him visiting my yard to go hunting. I wish him well in his hunting ventures in my yard.

I think it's great you're going to let a cat be cat! They need to get outside for fresh air and sunshine, maybe a few birds here and there, a couple crickets. We never kept our cats indoors if they didn't want to be, and certainly never had them declawed. Hurray for old scool real life! It's a refreshing return to the normal side of the world.

Ya know, I am normally a very nice person. But people like this make me mad because they have no idea what roaming cats do to their neighbors. My neighbor has many outside cats and they are constantly in my yard and garden pooping! I have every right to have a yard, flower bed, and garden that does not have cat poop in it! And I have also, very happily, shot many of her cats with my bb gun. I have talked to her many times, she does not care where her cats go. My hubby and I currently have a trap set up with "food" in it, to try and catch these cats. The minute they go after my chickens, I will be shooting them with something stronger than a bb gun.

They also pee on your patio furniture. We live out in the country, so I get the need for outdoor cats but I would much prefer they not come around my patio!

I don't disagree with what you said. When you mentioned how fast a cat can climb a tree it reminded me of something. Years ago my mother's cat climbed high up in a tall redwood tree and then couldn't figure out how to get back down. After three days of listening to her yowl and wail, they hired a tree man to rescue her. She wasn't the brightest cat they ever had, but I don't think she ever climbed a tree again.

I guess it depends on the cat too. LOL I do forget sometimes my cat amazes me quite a bit on how well she can climb and jump. Which actually makes me think maybe the original poster can make sure she knows the background of the cat and know that it’s always been an outdoor cat if she wants it to be outdoor indoor.

that’s another thing I mean with location. If the cat is causing destruction and problems at other people‘s properties that is a different story and the owner needs to take some sort of action to prevent that. I’ve always said my animals should never be anybody else’s problem. But if you live in an area where your neighbors are far away and haven’t heard any complaints from them that’s different. I’m lucky my cat Rarely crosses our property line and has never gotten on anybody else’s porch or messed with anybody else’s animals. Except she did swap the neighbors dog in the nose once When she roamed onto our property. But they actually thought it was pretty funny. LOL she deserved it

Agree with others, Craigslist, FB, asking your vet. I am really surprised the local shelters are insistent on those two things, being as overrun as they are with cats and kittens. I'm familiar with your area and I have seen alot of pleas for adoption and donations from shelters in your area on the Indianapolis news.

I'm disappointed in my local cat rescue as well. When I moved to my current residence, (18 acres out in the country with a lot of woods and some old farm buildings) I was looking to get a few barn cats to keep the mice population down. I contacted the local cat rescue, and they would not let me adopt any of their cats because they want all their cats to have inside homes! They acted like me wanting outside cats was a sin! This same group pleads on facebook daily asking for monetary donations, supplies, foster homes and adoptions. I quit donating to them. I grew up on a farm and you cannot live out in the country without cats - you would be overrun by mice and rats. I don't know what fantasy world the owner of the rescue grew up in.

Post on cl that your looking for a barn cat rescues trapped them so they can neuter or spayed them to try to keep the population down in the colony’s. Sometimes the rehome the younger ones for barn cats and it’s pretty small fee I didn’t for a friend of mine they come out just to make sure they have shelter and access to the outside

I’m very lucky that the shelter around us does not require declawing. The shelter the next county over does. They suggest having it done to drop an Animal off because it will probably get adopted faster that way and they will give you a discount for them to do it but no requirement. Only requirement is spay and neuter
Actually recently they rescued close to 200 cats that were living behind an old shut down Pizza Hut for years and years. Everyone knew there was some stray cats back there but no one expected that many. These cats obviously not used to people and usually stray cats like that don’t stand a chance. But they brought them back clean them up and check them out and started what they called operation Pizza Hut. Even sending out fliers to mailboxes about them. They were adopted as barn cats. Only required you to have some sort of safe weather resistant shelter like a barn. Since they weren’t used to people they weren’t sweet and cuddly but very happy to have a nice place to live and more than happy to keep it rodent free for you. I thought that was a pretty awesome idea

I do see both sides of the cat issue: Indoors vs. outdoors. And what to do if a cat becomes a nuisance. No home-owner should have to put up with someone else's pet encroaching on their home/yard. However, barn cats do have a purpose. And it's possible to have a well cared for barn cat. Yes, that barn cat may not live as long as a pampered lap kitty. But, the barn cat is a working animal who has a very important job to do in protecting the farm.

Re: declawing. The local HS in my area will not allow a kitty to leave their shelter if the intent is to have the kitty declawed. Such a person is put on their black list. I fully agree that declawing is barbaric.
