where to get an adult cat?????

My opinion is that life has risks. Hiding yourself, or something else, from life because we/it might get hurt only inhibits yourself or that which you restrict. Life is meant to be lived.
As I said, you pays your money and you takes your choice. Or chance.

I am not at all fond of our local humane societies b/c of their narrow minded agenda. But, I can cite some positives. They have a program that matches older pets with older citizens for a much reduced or even free fee. They also have a barn cat program. This places cats that have been neutered and had immunizations, but are otherwise not adoptable.

Either my "across the street" neighbor has gotten himself a cat (highly unlikely) or a stray has showed up in our yards. A black kitty. Very skittish. I am more than happy to have him visiting my yard to go hunting. I wish him well in his hunting ventures in my yard.

You are forgetting kids with BB guns, people who use cats for target practice and worse, marauding dogs, hawks, owls, coyotes and other predators, and passing cars. Your cat may be lucky enough to avoid all these perils. Or maybe not. I guess you pays your money and you takes your choice.
But as far as the debate on keeping cats indoors and outdoors really depends on where you live. My cat would have to walk for miles from my house before it got hit with a BB gun. Yes predators can be scary for cats because they are small. I do you ensure that my cats come inside every evening when predators are at a high-level I have also seen cats climbed 15 feet up a tree and only took about five seconds to do it. Cats are so much happier outdoors. I think that really is what cats prefer. But like I said it’s all in where you live and what situation works for that person the best

A lot of the times the vet can give you information on that. They often have people come to them who can no longer care for for whatever reason and want to find a good home instead of taking to the shelter. And check bulletin boards around your area. I find lots on the bulletin board at tractor supply and local farm stores

Let your Veterinarian know, sometimes people find cats and bring them to their Vet for placement.
If you have an emergency vet anywhere near you, let them know you're looking. Ours always has someone "in the back" who needs a good home. Sometimes it's a kitty or dog who was brought in by some good Samaritan who either found it injured or hit it and couldn't leave it (hooray for their good consciences!) Other times, it's a pet left by someone who just didn't want to be "bothered" with treating or paying for a simple treatment. My Mom has a gorgeous long-haired cat who was left as a three-day-old kitten, hand-reared by the staff at the E-vet - and now rules the roost like the Queen she was meant to be. I am absolutely amazed at what people throw away- especially beautiful babies like our Izzy!

I don't disagree with what you said. When you mentioned how fast a cat can climb a tree it reminded me of something. Years ago my mother's cat climbed high up in a tall redwood tree and then couldn't figure out how to get back down. After three days of listening to her yowl and wail, they hired a tree man to rescue her. She wasn't the brightest cat they ever had, but I don't think she ever climbed a tree again.

I think it's great you're going to let a cat be cat! They need to get outside for fresh air and sunshine, maybe a few birds here and there, a couple crickets. We never kept our cats indoors if they didn't want to be, and certainly never had them declawed. Hurray for old scool real life! It's a refreshing return to the normal side of the world.
X2! :)
