I can only fit a few more chickens in my coop and I can't get them all at once, but hatcheries like My Pet Chicken (where we ordered our pulletes and cockerel) and Mcmurray only ship at least a dozen or so at a time. I want to get a white Leghorn (I know they're pretty rare, my uncle has one but he can't ship me fertile eggs because he doesn't have a roo) and I also like Wyandottes. I don't these types are sold on Chick Days at TSC either.

Yes at TSC you have to buy a minimum of 6 here and I see those breeds very often I bought some Wyandottes last summer from there but I don't think any store sales single chicks

MPC will do 3 chick minimums after a certain date in March, so it depends on your patience. I might try fishing your state thread and see if anyone close to you would sell you a chick or two.

Meyer's Hatchery let's you order a minimum of three chicks April-November, I believe. So you could order from there if you're willing to wait. And if you have an Orscheln's that get chicks in the spring, you could probably pick as little as you want. :) Most hatcheries always do charge a higher live shipping rate in the colder months, I think. :)

Raising a single chick is not a good idea.... they need to learn to socialise and taking it from an environment where it was with lots of other chicks to being alone would really stress it. Winter is not a good time to order chicks from a hatchery in my opinion as the risks of them being delayed and dying in transit is too high, particularly with a small order. Best wait until the spring and order a few and then sell the surplus ones.

Where do you live? Because i got my chicks from LongIslandPoultry.net, you have to go pick them up and its first come first serve but we got healthy chicks and there wasn’t a minimum. They said that they do this because people just want to add to their flock.
