I am planning on getting some heritage turkeys, but I noticed several hatcheries require minimums higher that I would like. Anyone know where I can acquire 4-5 heritage poults? I live in Ohio

If you don't find a local breeder, you can try reserving birds ahead of time at your local feed and seed store.. Most local feed stores around here do a big hatchery order, where they cover the shipping cost, on the hope that people who buy chicks/poults from them will also end up buying feed and other supplies. This last year, I called up our local independent feed store, and they added the birds I wanted to their normal order. They gave me a call when the poults arrived, and everything was peachy.

For 4 to 5 you will have to get them from a local breeder. I think somebody here must get a comission from Kevin Porter since they mention him in just about every post but he has a min. order of 15 poults so that isn't going to help you unless you have a market to sell the ones you don't want.

Wished I did get commission. My thought was OH/IN might make a nice drive. It is always better to buy local, if possible. Several hatcheries will sell less, but the quality may be lower.

Steve, can we add you to our breeders listings? We recomemnd Kevin so much because he is about the only Heritage Turkey hatchery that advertises. We are trying to get a complete breeders listing so we can help those jsut starting.

I visited that web site the other day. It's really a wonderful guide to heritage breed turkeys.

I vowed I would NEVER type that URL again into my browser, nor click on a link to it -- just too dangerous. I can't have any more turkeys than the six I have right now. It could be a real addiction for some -- "I want ...., I want ...., I want ..."

Cackle is taking orders now. http://www.cacklehatchery.com/turkeypage.html

Turkeys
can be used to fill the minimum order of 15 chicks (standard size chick, peafowl chicks and rare breed chicks). Shipping is included in the on line price.

Porter has the largest selection of Heritage turkeys in North America from what I read recently. Before it was Sandhill. Sandhill also lets you combine turkeys and chicks to get your minimum order.

Cackle birds are shown and occasionaly win in the smaller shows.

Another good source for Exhibition Turkeys is Duane Urch, MN. Don't know if he will mix species in orders. Have a few friends that have ordered from Sandhill.

All the above ideas... and you could also try putting a CL ad asking if anyone else nearby wants to go in with you on an order of poults... split the shipping costs and all. Or even go ahead and order the min yourself and sell off the extras once they arrive to the people who didn't want to order the min.
