This is such a great question I was going to ask this myself. I have 4- 4weeks old GSL in a brooder. I hope the rain lets up so I can finish up the coop and get them out there in the next 2 weeks. But I was wondering about keeping water/ food in the coop Do I reallly need to put it in there? Im short on space as it is. I was really hoping I can get away with not.
I moved my chicks out to the coop at 5 weeks old. I only ended up putting water/food in the run area and they were fine. I lock them up in the 'coop' portion each night while they're still so young and open it back up first thing in the morning. The girls make a beeline to the food like they're starving, even though they went to bed with full crops. They're just like kids... Think with their stomachs. But they're doing fine and loving their coop/run!
