I am very new to raising chickens but am loving it so far with the exception of a sick girl. She started limping 5 days ago. I have her separate, have socked her leg, applied tfiple antibiotic cream to the red sore on her leg and have seen no improvement. Tonight when I went to check on her, her leg was warm to the touch. How do I get so.e antib5 for her. I am way to attached to these chickens. ...not easy to see one sick.

Welcome to BYC. It's best to give a few more details so that we can help you figure out what exactly is wrong, since you don't want to use antibiotics unless necessary. You also would want to correct one to use if it is needed. Can you tell us how old she is, if this is an injury, how it happened, and where on the leg. Do you feel like there is an infected wound? Have you checked for bumble foot, a dark swollen spot on the pad of the foot? Farm stores sell some antibiotics for certain things like respiratory diseases, intestinal diseases, and not as many for wound infections. Lastly, a picture helps tremendously.

I am guessing she is about 2 years old and she js a bantom. I have no idea what happened to her. She started limping and I checked her over really good and could not see anything. I checked for bumblefoot and mits but did not see anything. The red area alpeared o. Her foot several days after the limp and iz in her lower leg.

Pictures can really help. There are many different leg diseases such as scaly leg mites, gout, mycoplasma, and viral arthritis to name a few. Is the red place open or bleeding? Is it in a joint? Could it be a bruise from a break? If she is limping badly I would place her in a cage with food and water. Then I would dissolve a vitamin B complex tablet in the water for now. If you can get a picture, we might be able to help you more.

I have her in a separate cage. I will try to get a picture tomorrow. I don't think it is in a joint. I just don't llike the heat it is givi g off. It makes me think of I fection.

The pictures are blurry. I would probably go to the feed store and go to the refrigerated medicines, and buy Procaine Penicillin G (there are different brands.) Buy 4 syringes (3 cc) and 4 needles (20 gauge.) Give her an injection of 1/4 cc or ml 1/4 inch deep into the breast muscle once a day for 4 days. It could be a staph infection, or it could be something else, but this is a start. A vet is always your best option. The penicillin may help. Keep putting the antibiotic ointment on it.
