Hello,
I have little Downy who is a pekin duckling who is probably going on 2 months.
I adopted him after he got seperated from his mother.

I have been planning on releasing him back into the wild when he can fly and get away from predators.
But now I'm thinking where in DFW have I seen a population of pekins and I just don't recall.

Does anyone have any idea?
Or any other thoughts on release in general.
I want him (or her) to have a family and a good life, but not if they are going to get killed on the second day!

He may not make it through the first day. He is not equipped to survive on his own. It is an awful way to live and to die.

There is a free rehoming forum here on BYC, and a Where Am I Where Are You forum so you might find someone in your area willing to take the duck.

No, I am saying it would be awful for you to release him. Ducks can be quite content as indoor animals.

There is a thread on the Duck Forum for Indoor Ducks, I believe.

It looked like you had decided to get rid of him, so I suggested better ways than letting him out on his own. If you want to keep him, there are many people who have indoor ducks. Nettie and her ducks have even been featured on television shows. DenverDucky, I think featherfinder, others keep indoor ducks.

Mine sleep in the walkout basement because it is warm enough in winter, and fairly predator-resistant. And I can hear them so I know if there is fussing going on.

You want to get rid of the duck yes?

If you post here, someone will take this duck off your hands with no judgement.

Releasing this duck into the wild is a bad idea.

I am 186 miles from you between Coleman, TX and Lawn, TX if you can get him/her here there is a home for her with 24 other ducks. Please do not just release the duck at some lake or pond. Pekin ducks are not wild ducks and their survival skills have pretty much been bred out of them. Another alternative is to Google duck rescue Dallas TX. There are a number of rescue organizations in the results that will probably be able to assist you.

If this is a pet duck please be carefull about who you give him to. If you don't want him to become a meal you must say so and check out where he is going.

If you want to keep him there is helpful information on the Duck Forum.

Please do not release him. He will NEVER be able to fly. Even if he survives the first few days, he will have a substantially shorter life than he would otherwise. Plus, these ducks often get sick, injured, or ill and there's usually no one to care for them. The diet people feed them in parks shortens their life and makes them sick while they're alive. Female ducks are often tortured by males and endure a long painful death by too many males mating with them because they can't get away.

I see a couple people here who are willing to travel a long distance to get him or her. He or she is adorable. Pekins have a great personality.
