Where to store feed?

I keep mine in one of those 31gal. Behren metal trash cans. They're tall enough that a raccoon isn't going to get leverage to remove the lid, or at least none have yet, and I don't have to worry about anything larger than that unless a 2-legged predator trespasses to see what's in the can. That size holds 2 bags-worth of feed.

I also keep in metal trash can with silicone in inside of lid handle. It's hard for me to get off so no problem with varmints removing lid. I agree to keep out of run and coop so not to attract them to chickens

This really works for me. No rodents, no predators. Hope you get your sewing room back!! :D

I don’t have enough feed to need huge storage. I store them on a high shelf in the coop in some containers or tins and have never had problems except for when food is left outside of a container in the coop. Thats when pests come in.

I even had a squrriel get trapped in the coop (food was left out) and panic so much so that it chewed through 2 layers of window screen.

I know that Privett Hatchery has Sultan's still! Not sure about Silkies. I've had good luck with Privett. :jumpy
Good to know. I want to get the second batch all together so they may brood together. I have first batch still in brooder at this time. I figure they won't move out within four weeks (they are only a week old).

Apparently there is some big deal about putting different age/sized chicks together. Am I right/wrong? Otherwise I'd love to get him now.

It's usually the idea that when introducing any new birds whether old or young, they should be quarantined at first to make sure they're healthy. If you can separate the 2 batches in any way for just a bit at first, then do a slow integration with wire divider in the same brooder for a bit and when they're all off of heat. If you just monitor them closely you can probably combine them without too much difficulty. Since chicks don't really have an established pecking order it can actually be easier to integrate than it is with older hens. It's of course very helpful to have multiple feeders and waterer's so they don't fight about that. I think if you start a new thread, you'll get a lot of experience and advice on this! I've only done it with chicks off heat at about 7weeks but I definitely would with very young chicks, just carefully. Good Luck!!
