Where's all the peeps that got MPC Special *Updated Pics 5 Weeks pg 3*

Looks like your chicks are doing well. I posted a few pictures this morning of my chicks hoping to get some help in identifying them.

I believe the only difference between rocks and leghorns is their size, but I could be wrong about that. Once they are older, the rocks will have red earlobes and the leghorns will have white, but it seems as if they both have yellow legs? But I'm not sure.

We received our MPC special today, but it was all EEs, not the rainbow special. We received 25 -no extras - and two of them have problems. One has a deformed leg or spraddle leg, not sure which. It was shipped on straw, so I don't know how it would have gotten spraddle leg. The other has "failure to thrive"? It won't open its eyes, except for when I dip its beak into water and make it drink (I've done this about every 30-45 minutes since opening the box). It has done nothing but sleep the entire day (I don't think it's going to make it).

The other 23 chicks are doing wonderfully - very active - eating and drinking just fine. They are all so adorable - such cute, fluffy faces.

This is the chick with the splayed leg. I've put a band-aid on it to hold the legs closer together (hope it works).

The band-aids should work. Even being shipped on straw, it's possible for that to happen. It could have been very young when they shipped it, and was probably on the bottom of the pile. Its leg could have done that from trying to fight its way out of the pile.

Do you have any vitamin drops to give the other chick? I'm sure that would help. Do you have sugar in the water, or just plain water? That would help give it a boost as well. Try giving it some wet mash to eat, put its beak in it to get it to eat. Hope the little one pulls through!

The weak one died today. It was still alive this morning and I gave it more drinks (of sugar water), but it was even weaker than the day before and wouldn't even open its eyes. It was gone around 1 p.m.

I hope the band-aid works. I think it will work if the chick does have spraddle legs - I'm just not sure that it is spraddle leg (could be a deformed leg). It hobbles around pretty good (much better than before the band-aid), but hasn't improved from yesterday. Even though I taped the foot in the right direction, the chick still keeps its foot turned out instead of underneath it.

All the rest of the peepers are pretty active and healthy - I did find a good case of pasty butt, but think I found it in time (I took care of it with warm water & tissue). The poor little baby walked funny for a bit, but now I can't pick it out from the others.

Sorry to hear about the little one, get some poly-vi-sol infant vitamin drops without iron to keep on hand for future issues. You can give these to any birds, young and old, so they are good to have on-hand.

The chick with the messed up leg, how close do you have the legs taped together? The gauze part of the bandaid should be between the legs as the 'spacer', and it should be just above the feet.

So sorry to hear your little guy didn't make it.

I hope the leg heals ok with your other one.

I used the bandaid thing on one of my home hatched d'uccles, and it did work! I wish you luck, it helped that I checked the chick twice a day and made sure it took a drink each time. But I had to clean all the food off that stuck to its bottom until it was strong enough to stand up and hop with the splints. So it gradually went from sitting on its bottom constantly to standing and jumping with both feet. After about 3 days it was standing up all the time when it wasn't sleeping. And then it was like that scene in Forrest Gump when his leg braces fall off (except I cheated and snipped the middle of the bandaid first to see if chickie would do okay), and it stood and walked around for a while so I went ahead and removed the rest of the bandaid. Unfortunately, with the feather footed ones, that was NOT easy!

But the hopping and stuff sounds like my chick 'hoppy' who I had to rehome because she couldn't maneuver well i the pine shavings after she was bigger, she basically flopped to her food and water. She did better in a wire cage with wire flooring that she didn't slip on so much. She was born that way with a contractured leg which hampered her because it would get hooked around things. I still miss her. She was going to be my lap chicken, but I couldn't keep her in the house d/t the pine shaving mess. I would have bought her a chicken diaper if I hadn't found a home for her. Good luck!
